Snacks for the Weekend

DAY 11
of the 30-Day Blog Challenge, 2011
Hi, folks!

Here's another short post for tonight. I have to sleep off this splitting headache, and get ready for a busy family weekend! Anyhow, I will be snacking on Clif Kid Z Bars and Kashi granola bars. If you haven't tried them, I suggest you do. Unlike many energy/snack bars out in the market, these two aren't cloyingly sweet.

Tell me: What's your on-the-go favorite snack? Leave a comment, and I'll draw two winners by end of next week and send a box (or two) of these yummy bars.

Have a great weekend y'all!

Trapper Keeper!

You know you want one.

I was just over by Elle.com and came across a post on perhaps my favorite school accessory of all time (Elle Undercover "Fashion Week Accessory: The Trapper Keeper" by Johanna Cox). Oh my gosh, I LOVED Trapper Keepers as a student! My mother helped indulge this fixation by buying several of them in different designs, even for herself and for my father (who was starting a journalist career at the time).

I am this close to getting myself one for...oh well, just because! I should probably buy several and have a Trapper Keeper Giveaway here, picking up from the Sharpie Giveaway I held last last month. Oh what fun! Do drop me a line and let me know your thoughts.

The author of the article mentions another 80's school supply icon, Lisa Frank. Admit it: You looked forward to those Balikbayan boxes for those bright, whimsical stickers and folders. To quote from the post in which Cox notes the usefulness of the Trapper Keeper for the upcoming New York Fashion Week:

"Although no longer themed with Lisa Frank’s acid-trippy unicorns and dilated teddy bears, the TrapKeep is still very much for sale. A Moleskin notebook is fine and nice, but does it come with tabbed folders, one each for Narciso, Marc and Rodarte? Can you slip your day’s invitations into its convenient plastic pouch? Can it double as a seat cushion if your mini goes micro mini upon taking your seat in the front-row? I think not."

True.

Another remnant of my 90s student life is the FILOFAX. I remember pre-schoolyear trips to Regina's and Tickles, where they sold a variety of colors and fabrics, along with a bevy of refills, pockets, and whatever one could insert in every slot.

Eventually and at the turn of the millennium, things got smaller and smaller by way of the Palm Pilot. (I got the Handspring instead in an effort to not have what everybody else had.)

These days, I write everything down on a fuchsia pink Mead notebook and punch calendar reminders on my trusty Nokia phone. Everything else, I email to myself on Gmail.

Now if you'll excuse me for a sec, I'm browsing the Mead website, reviving my long-lost Trapper Keeper fancy :)

UPDATE 09/09/09: I just won this on eBay! It's the exact same Trapper Keeper design I had from Freshman year in high school :) Thanks, jump-dumpster!

They made it!

Love this pic!

Well, at least one of them did :) I recently mailed out Sharpie markers to blogger friends I've made here and I wasn't sure if the pens were actually going to reach their recipients (for the scoop on this, read my Sharpie Giveaway post). So imagine my delight when I saw over at Eternal Sunshine that hers had arrived, complete with this beautiful photo posted in her blog as a thank-you note (you're welcome, PinkTwistedHalo!).

I have yet to see how many of those I sent out make it to Manila, but this Sharpie experience has inspired me more than ever to hold giveaways here at NyMinuteNow.com. My friend, Frances of Topaz Horizon regularly does this, and I know I'll be taking her lead in terms of drawing prizes in the future: To choose the winners for her recent Moleskin Giveaway, she wrote down all the names of entries on a sheet of paper, cut the sheet in strips, shook them up in a box, and picked a winning name.

What I have in mind for future giveaways so far are:

1) COLORFUL Post-its from Office Depot! Cute first-aid kits from Target!

2) A bottle of perfume for one of the first 10 subscribers/FriendConnect followers at BeautyintheBigApple.com once I've finally finished uploading the whole archive of articles and have successfully marketed for prizes (or maybe just get from my mother's stash).

3) Items that don't contain liquids or anything that can break in transit. Please feel free to send in your suggestions.

UPDATE 08/12/09: This just in from Chasing Dreams. Thanks for posting this, Riz!

My Sharpie Giveaway!

Get your dose of these candy-colored markers.

It's Day 23 of my 30-day Blog Challenge and I'm feeling generous!

You know how I love school and office supplies. I have with me eight of these cute Sharpie Mini keychain pens and I'm giving away one each to eight lovely readers. All you have to do is...

1) Write a post (short or long is entirely up to you) describing what your favorite school and office supply item is (or are—I'm curious!).

2) Mention http://nyminutenow.com anywhere on your post.

3) When you're done, leave a comment here notifying me of your recent blog entry. Don't forget to leave a link to your website!

I will mail one Sharpie marker each to the first eight readers to complete the mechanics. As for color choices, I'll also do it chronologically: first blogger gets to choose from all eight, second from seven...and the last entry gets the last marker left.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line at mariel@nyminutenow.com. It's also the new email address for this blog. And if you're one of the eight winners, I'll be leaving a comment asking you to send your mailing information there.

I'm excited to read your posts and discover new blogs to browse!

UPDATE 07/16: Thank you to all who have posted and left comments! Ela, Yam of ExploreEveryday, and Riz of ChasingDreams, I've already mailed your packets yesterday. Pink Twisted Halo of EternalSunshine and Kelly of UnneMedicineKelly, I'll be mailing yours tomorrow.

Maris, I need your conact info and color choice please :) So far, all are taken except black, blue, and green.

So there are two Sharpies still left to giveaway! Will wait for two new posts!
